So I was talking about Supernatural...
Kripke's Ideas Scare Me
[info]nikkicovington

Which in my case, is never a good idea. I was talking with my sister this morning after she was telling me about the CW Awards at Watch With Kristen @ eonline.com and it just so happened that a little show about brothers (TWO brothers, mind you) was mentioned. Now, normally I would have been excited, but lately, Supernatural has done nothing for me. Season 4 has completely changed my opinion about this show that I had once so dearly loved, and frankly, this little poll didn't help matters much.

While the ever so popular Jensen Ackles had been nominated for Best Actor, Jared's name was nowhere in sight, which doesn't really seem fair to me. I know it seems a little lame to possibly get even a little upset over a small poll, but it was a little more than that. Of course, I've talked to my sister time and time again about my rising problems with the show, and they're exactly why I don't watch any new episodes this season.

For one, I hate how Jared Padalecki seems to go without notice. Anytime he wins something (at least something that doesn't even have to deal with fandom, cause heaven forbid he win something there) fans of the show get angry that it wasn't Jensen Ackles instead. I've heard so many rumors about how they are always trying to beat each other out when it comes to those certain things, but honestly, it seems that they love to have each other win. Now, I am not biased when it comes to Jensen and Jared. I love the both of them, and both are really good actors, but I just don't get why everyone has this vendetta against Jared. Was it that I missed the idea of hating him? Did he kill some innocent person so people have to show their dislike for him? I mean, I seriously don't get it. I've watched both boys act in different things, and while Jared seems to play a lot of different roles, Jensen is either that tough guy with maybe a sweet side or the love interest (if you want to get early.) Jensen always seems to be that guy with the great, sarcastic lines (thank you Dark Angel for starting this kick) and being a so-called badass. I know ladies love a guy who's rough around the edges, but you'd think there would still be love for an adorkable doof. The thing that really kills me? Jensen seems to mostly be a quiet guy, but everyone would rather see him for the roles he plays.

Speaking of Jared, there seems to be this intense hatred of his character Sam. If you watch the beginning of the show, it more or less seems like it was a little more about Sam, or at least, his storyline. Now, most of the fandom seem to have hated his storyline with the special kids and YED and such, but when it came to fourth season and Castiel showed up to bring Dean back and make him the chosen one for God, it was A-OK. Everyone loved the idea. The fandom even began to absolutely adore Castiel. The thing I don't get is why people love Dean's new storyline but made Sam's storyline be pushed away. It's really the same thing. Sam's the chosen boy for Hell. Dean's the chosen boy for Heaven. Ruby is practically Sam's love slave from the dark side. Anna is practically Dean's love slave from the Heavens above. Lilith wants to use Sam. Castiel/Uriel want to use Dean. The only difference is one plays for the so-called good team, and the other for the bad. Dean just seems to get more storylines than ever now. Another example; remember how in season three Ruby was getting Sam to find out about his mother's family? Instead of Sam continuing this search, Dean took over. Most of Sam's storylines have been taken from him, reworked, and given to Dean. And in all of this, Dean seems to do nothing wrong. He has no flaws (at least in fandom's point of view) and everything he does is so heartfelt. When it comes to Sam though, fandom seems to have this opinion where everything he does is some dark scheme that will unfold at any moment, revealing his true evil nature. Nice one guys. It's just cliche enough.

Then there's Castiel. I personally don't get why everyone loves him. Fandom seems to love him more than Sam, who has been a main character since day one. For one, I don't care how nice the actor may be, his voice always sounds the same. There is no emphasizing, only one drawn out sentence after another. I don't understand why Dean would even trust him. Because he brought him back to this world and he could "put him back?" Since when did Castiel become Dean's mother? And why would Dean keep trusting a guy who obviously hates his own brother. I didn't know Dean was too stupid to realize that the angel squad want Sam dead, as if it's not obvious. Not to mention that they try too hard to give Castiel this sort of mysterious way about him that it just comes off as cheezy most of the time. Or even trying out the threatening angle, because it's oh so scary. He's just another tag-along like Ruby.

As if the list could get any longer, there's Ruby. Now I know probably most of the fandom would agree with me on this one, no matter how ironic it would be. I've heard that the actress is rather nice, and to be truthful, I feel sorry for her. The fandom wants to carry their hatred of Ruby off to the actress herself, which is usually taken out on her at conventions. Way to be mature, guys. I have to admit, Genevieve is not the best actress, and she makes Katie Cassidy as Ruby look like a dream come true. I was dying for Ruby to stay as that big housekeeper at that motel, or even the one from the flashback when Sam runs into her again. I also hate the idea of her acting like she loves Sam and she's a good guy, etc. For one, the Ruby that was created in third season probably would have never acted like Sam's love-monkey. Two, she wouldn't act like a good samaritan and try to help out when she could. And lastly, why does it seem like Dean is great with her being an attachment to his brother? I thought there was supposed to be a sort of hatred there, but I guess it's all good now. Not to mention, I can't stand the rumors about Jessica being Ruby. The only similarity is blonde hair. Since when did Jess get a too-tight-panties attitude and learn magic from many, many years ago? It'll most likely be something along the lines of her being a demon already. Yay for smart story-telling.

And then there's Anna. The first episode she appeared in, I didn't mind her so much. Sure, the actress was a little off and her storyline was a little big for what should have been a minor character, but it was easy to get over. All of a sudden she turns into a Mary Sue within only a couple of episodes. At least it took Bela most of the season to turn into one. We find out that sweet little Anna that everyone thought was crazy was a has-been angel who, for one, had a past with the romantic known as Castiel and falls madly in love with Dean within, what, practically ten minutes of meeting him? And then the storyline gets even more rich. She gets to make love to Dean in, of all places, the back of his car where an overly mushy Titanic scene is placed. Way to gain your grace back, then again, I guess it doesn't matter since your grace is an ACTUAL OBJECT. To make matters worse, everyone is after her, and she sacrifices herself out of the goodness of her heart and explodes into a sparkly white light. Dean cries over his tru wuv, etc. And now there's rumors that she might come back. Can't wait to see what else they'll give her. Maybe she might get to save everyone again and it will be so touching.

So, that's most of my beef with this down-hill show. It kills me that all of this is plain to see, and even though some of the fandom notices, they suck it up and act like everything's great. I used to love this show because it really was about family, and they did it in such a realistic way. Now I feel like it's gone, and the more fandom wants Sam to go evil and there be a brother face-off (though it's rather expected, right?) the more I'm scared it's going to happen. If I were to put this anywhere else, there would be an array of people telling me to shut up and that I'm wrong, though I don't see how an opinion can be wrong. So I'll go back to the boxsets, watch the new shows I love, and pretend that fourth season is not even canon.

Coming at you from the Attic,
Nikki
